- Social Networking Sites-A "social network site" is a category of websites with profiles, semi-persistent public commentary on the profile, and a public social network displayed in relation to the profile. Examples of social network sites are Facebook.com and Myspace.com. These sites are frequently targeted by hackers who employ social engineering tactics.
- Spoof, spoofed
- To pretend to be something. A spoofed email is one that pretends to be from a source other than its true source. A spoofed webpage is one that appears to be something other than what it is. Spoofing is common in phishing scams
- spyware
- Spyware-Any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.
- spyware cookie
- Spyware Cookie-A cookie small file that is created by a webpage and stores information. A spyware cookie is malicious. It stores information such as browsing habits and personal information and reports this information to other companies for the purposes of advertising, without your knowledge or consent.
- toolbar
- Toolbar-A program which adds buttons to your browser, usually grouped together below the address bar or along the bottom of your browser window. Similar to a BHO.
- tracking cookies
- Tracking Cookie-Internet browsers write and read cookies, files with small amounts of data (such as site passwords and settings) based on instructions from Web sites. In many cases, cookies provide a benefit to users. However, in some instances tracking cookies are used to consolidate and track user behaviour across different sites, which provide marketers with private information about the website's users.
- trojan
Trojan-Trojan viruses slip into an individual’s system and run without the user’s knowledge. They can have many malicious functions. For example, some trojans are dialers that use a computer's modem to dial long-distance, generating huge phone bills for the computer owner. Unlike viruses and worms, trojan infections do not make copies of themselves. They are often used to exploit a user's computer to download other malicious adware and spyware programs, through a backdoor or a downloader mechanism.
- URL prefix attacks
- URL Prefix Attacks-Also known as default page hijacking. This is when a browser hijacker changes the default prefix appended to the url if one is not included. Browser hijackers use this as a means to redirect your page search from the default url.
- variant
- Variant-A new version of a piece of malware. Virus and spyware authors use variants to change older infections to maliciously attack computers in different ways.
- virus
- Virus-A computer virus is a self-replicating program containing malicious code that explicitly copies itself and can infect other programs by modifying them.
- worm
- Worm-A computer worm is a self-replicating computer program, similar to a computer virus. A virus attaches itself to, and becomes part of, another executable program; however, a worm is self-contained and does not need to be part of another program to propagate itself. They are often designed to exploit the file transmission capabilities found on many computers.
- worm bin
- Worm Bin-Stop-Sign's network-isolated testing environment. Used to gather, test and log live virus and spyware samples, and test cleaners against infected machines.
- zombie
- Zombie-A zombie computer is a computer attached to the Internet that has been compromised by a hacker, a computer virus , or a trojan horse, and performs malicious tasks of one sort of another, under the direction of the hacker. Many owners of zombie computers are unaware that their systems are zombies or that any hacker attack ever occurred.
