Deskbar: A Search Bar On The Taskbar

The Deskbar Software Application is installed via the DollarRevenue infection. When infected, a user will have a search toolbar added to the Windows Taskbar by the time clock and active icons. Since it uses the internet with its application, it may track a users information to report to a host site.

Due to the nature in which the Deskbar Software Application is installed, it is suggested that a user remove this toolbar from their system. I have infected a computer with this possible spyware application and have included my findings in this report. You will find some images, information about Deskbar application, as well as how I removed it from my system.

Deskbar Software Package

What Is It?

The Deskbar Software Package is a search toolbar that gets installed via the DollarRevenue infection.

What Does It Do? And What Does It Look Like?

Deskbar adds a search toolbar directly to the Windows Taskbar, it is not added as a browser toolbar. Below is an image similar to what you would see if you were to have the Deskbar toolbar on your computer.

In the center of the Deskbar toolbar, there is an area for a user to "Enter Search Terms."

Other than the main search area, there are two buttons on either side of the Deskbar. The button on the right side of the application uses a spyglass or magnifying glass icon that will initiate a search. On the left is a hidden button that is revealed when a mouse is hovered over it. The hidden button is plain and appears as a blank box.

Even though the plain looking button on the left looks like it doesn't do anything, it will take you to the Deskbar homepage when clicked.

A user can initiate a search in the Deskbar toolbar by entering text into the specified area and hitting the ENTER key or clicking on the button to the right side of the search. I searched for the word cat, and this is the site that came up;

How Can I Remove It?

You can find an option to uninstall Deskbar in the Add or Remove section in the Control Panel. It will titled "Search Bar" in the Add/Remove list. When you click on the option to remove it, an Alert will come up telling you to restart the computer. When I uninstalled the Deskbar, a webpage opened called "Find The Website You Need.” I closed the window and opened up my browser. Nothing seemed to have been affected by this site.

Once the uninstall is complete, the Deskbar Toolbar that was on the Windows taskbar disappears. The uninstaller provided with the program seems to remove the Deskbar application from the registry and the taskbar as well as deleting most of the files that are associated with Deskbar. However, after running the uninstaller and restarting the computer, there was still a folder for Deskbar in the Program Files directory with an inst.bat file inside of it.

If you choose to remove Deskbar toolbar on your own using the uninstaller, you should run an Anti-Spyware Scanner like StopSign to make sure that the Deskbar Software Package was fully removed from your system.
