How do I back up my computer's registry?

Before you remove a virus-infected file from your computer, we recommend that you back up your computer's registry, so you can reverse any changes if you make an error.

To back up your registry, follow these instructions.

  1. Click Start > Run. Type REGEDIT in the "Open" box, then click OK.
  2. Click My Computer at the top, left side of the Registry Editor window.
  3. Click Registry.
  4. Click Export Registry File. (If you have Windows XP, click File > Export.)
  5. Save the backup file to your desktop.
    • Windows 95, 98, or NT: Go to the "Save In" box near the top, and use the small black arrow at the right of the box to select Desktop (at the top of the list).
    • Windows ME, 2000, or XP: Click the Desktop icon near the top.
  6. In the box next to "File Name", type a name for the backup registry you are making. For example, REGBACKUP.
  7. Click Save to save the registry backup file to your desktop.
  8. Keep this backup file on your desktop for a week or so, until you are completely sure your computer is working properly.

To undo the changes you have made to your registry, double-click the registry backup icon that you exported to your desktop in Step 6 above.
