How do I defrag my hard drive?

Many issues resulting from virus infection can be alleviated by defragmenting your hard drive.

Please restart your system in safe mode. This will help ensure that the lengthy process of defragmenting your drive will be completed efficiently. To defrag in safe mode, follow these instructions.

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. As your computer is restarting, press the F8 key repeatedly.
  3. Select "Start Up in SAFE MODE" at the menu.
  4. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scandisk/Defrag.
Note: Different versions of Windows have a different sequence of steps. Look for Disk defragmenter in your program files, open this program and follow the steps. When you have completed defragmenting your drive, restart Windows as usual and scan once more with StopSign AntiVirus Scanner.
