How do I replace critical system files? |
|
To replace infected critical system files for Windows NT/2000/XP, please follow these instructions.
Note: You will need your original Windows Installation CD to complete these instructions. Do not proceed without it. Also, if you do not have administrative privileges on your computer, the operating system will not allow you to execute these instructions.
- Click Start > Run.
- Type command in the "Open" box, then click OK.
- The Command window will open. Type SFC /SCANNOW (include a space between SFC and /SCANNOW), then press Enter.
- The Windows File Protection window will open. Allow this window to run to completion. Do not manually close this window. When the process is complete, the window will close automatically.
Note: If you manually close the Command window before the Windows File Protection process has completed, your computer may freeze and require restarting.
- If prompted, insert your Windows Installation Disk in the CD-ROM drive.
- After the Windows File Protection window closes automatically, type Exit in the Command window, then press Enter.
- Run a new scan with StopSign Threat Scanner to verify that the infected file(s) have been replaced with a new clean version.
If you have any problems with these instructions, or if the infected file reappears in future scans, please contact us at
